Biblical Teaching on Equality
Our Declaration of Independence begins, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” and yet many do not receive equal treatment. Why? Before God all are equal, but in the eyes of men, people are not equal, because man does not look at people the way God looks at people. As God directed Samuel to anoint the next king of Israel, He spoke to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7. If man does not look on others the way God does, how can we know how man is equal with others?
Man sees inequality in:
His religion John 4:20
His gender John 4:27
His race Romans 3:29
His background Luke 10: 31-33
His work Matthew 20:12
His intelligence 1 Corinthians 1:20-21
His abilities 1 Corinthians 12: 21
His strength 1 Corinthians 12:22
His age 1 Timothy 4:12
His successes James 2:1-5
And Paul says don't compare yourself with others 2 Corinthians 10:12
There is no one equal with God Isaiah 46:5, except for the God-man Jesus Christ.
Jesus made Himself equal with God John 5:18
Jesus declared His equality with God John 10:30
Jesus did not consider equality with God (deity) something to be held onto, but relinquished the use of His divine attributes to be born a man and fulfill God's will to die on the cross to save man Philippians 2:6
Jesus is also equal with man as our Mediator 1 Timothy 2:5
Believers in Christ are equal with each other
All were made in the image of God Gen. 9:6; 1 Corinthians 11:7.
Through faith in Christ, there is complete equality (as well as oneness) Gal. 3:26-28.
As children of God, we are to imitate God, therefore we approach equality in Christ Ephesians 5:1.
Walking in God's power, we share the divine nature of God, therefore are equal, because of that divine nature 2 Peter 1:3-4.
As children of God, growing in Christ, we are transformed from glory to glory, therefore are becoming more equal 2 Corinthians 3:18.
Giving to God is designed to ensure that there be equality 2 Corinthians 8:13-14
There is glory given to all men Romans 2:10
God uses the foolish to put to shame the wise, the weak to shame the mighty 1 Corinthians 1:27.
So, if we are equal, then should we make distinctions, comparisons, or treat others as being different? Yes, there are many differences in looks, abilities, talents, intelligence, background, preparations, urgency for living, but none of these things matter before God. We have equality when filled with the Spirit, because the Holy Spirit makes us equal in Christ. Therefore we ought not to let others look down on us - we have Jesus! And the Holy Spirit! Let them look down, for they will stumble over themselves. If you are a believer, stand up, be strong, and walk with the confidence of knowing who you are in Christ Jesus the Lord!
