Biblical Teaching on Rejection
Rejection is one of the realities of life to help people deal with life and depend solely on God. Because we are not God and don't know all the details of what is happening or what people are thinking, we only have our own perspective, which is often short-sighted, often distorted, and often too narrow in view. The emotional turmoil of rejection neutralizes many Christians from venturing into God's amazing plan and accomplishing God's will for life. So what does Scripture teach about rejection?
Rejection related to God:
God said He was rejected by His own people Numbers 14:11,23; 16:30; cf. 1 Samuel 10:19. He states He provided everything they needed, and their lack of belief, resulted in them knowing His rejection Numbers 14:34.
God clearly states that when His people reject His knowledge, that He will reject them Hosea 4:6; 1 Samuel 15:23,26; 16:1. In fact it gets worse, because God says He will forget their children. Would that explain why children fall away from the Lord? Is it because He is not drawing them to Himself? Because the parents have not grown to love God's knowledge and to grow in grace and the knowledge of His Word? It even explained why environmental problems plagued Israel Isaiah 5:24 and calamity Jeremiah 6:19; 7:29 and even enemies Hosea 8:3,5. This is why some face death Hebrews 10:28.
Jesus faced the rejection of God's Word, because men wanted to keep their own traditions instead Mark 7:9. There is something about Proverbs 14:12 here, “There is a way that seems right to man, but the end is the way of death.”
The Jews rejected Jesus as the cornerstone and He became a stumbling block to them Psalm 118:22; Matthew 21:42; Mark 8:31; 12:10; Luke 9:22; 17:25; 20:17; Acts 4:11; Romans 11:33; 1 Peter 2:4,7.
But it wasn't the Jews alone, for we all rejected Him Isaiah 53:3.
God rejects those who wander from His Word Psalm 119:118. Whoa, at what point does God reject me if or when I don't spend time in His Word? Would that explain why people struggle so much in life, because they have not spent time growing in His Word, so God has rejected them? The question remains for them, that whoever rejects God's Word, what wisdom do they have Jeremiah 8:9?
Without repentance, God rejects those who depend on themselves rather than Him in humility Hebrews 12:17.
When other things become more important to man, God's anger rises up and destroys His people 2 Kings 17:15-20.
God will reject experientially His people, because they rejected Him, but will not cast off His people completely Jeremiah 14:19; Romans 11:1-2.
God rejects the allies of God's people, when God's people trust in the allies more than God Jeremiah 2:37.
You must deal with the horizontal level of rejection:
Rejecting the advice of elders can lead to fateful harm to all people 1 King 12:8-13; 2 Chronicles 12:8-13; Hebrews 13:7,17; cf. Acts 7: 35,39.
Paul and Barnabas tried to reach the Jews, but their rejection caused Paul and Barnabas to turn to reach the Gentiles Acts 13:46. This is an interesting verse, because it seems to have some sarcasm of Paul in it.
Rejecting God's messenger of the Word is a rejection of God, not only the messenger 1 Samuel 8:7; 1 Thessalonians 4:8; Jude 1:8.
We have to proactively reject common and old wives' tales and seize God's Word 1 Tim. 4:7, because our flesh (the natural man) grows corrupt without putting on what God has created in righteousness and truth after salvation Ephesians 4:22-24. In other words, godliness doesn't just happen nor is it maintained without proactive pursuit of knowing God in His Word by means of His Spirit.
Some will reject having a good conscience, choosing instead to follow the way of the flesh 1 Timothy 1:19. Consequently, God will reject them Hebrews 6:8.
There is a time when believers must reject a divisive man who does not seek the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace Titus 3:10.
The HOPE is that God never totally rejects His own people. He may allow them to go through horrible Divine Discipline (Hebrews 12:5,6), but He will keep His people secure for salvation. Remember God always waits for His people to turn to Him (Isaiah 30:18) to pour out blessing. Will you trust Him? Turn to Him and do what Scripture says, and you will again experience God's total grace blessing in life.
