Biblical Teaching on God's Sovereignty
Many theologians do not include the Sovereignty of God as an attribute of God or characteristic of God, but rather describe it as a prerogative or choice of God. Sovereignty is based on the perfections of God, which are His attributes. Sovereignty is the absolute choice God unilaterally makes in creation, determining times and bounds and exercising grace and mercy. Paul states it well in Ephesians 1:11, “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will.” Submission to God's sovereignty brings great blessing, but rejection of his sovereignty results in anguish, sorrow, frustration, and misery. Because of God's sovereignty, the good news of Jesus Christ is something to be obeyed (John 3:36), not merely acknowledged.
God's absolute authority is perfect and final Romans 9:21. Sovereignty means God's choice is supreme, chief and perfect. He is free to choose as He determines. He is chief in that there is no being greater or supreme over God. He is in control of all things and does not abdicate His powers Isaiah 45:6,7.
God's sovereignty was established in eternity past, therefore His immutability (God does not change) is His attribute Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:5.
God is sovereign because of His infinity Acts 17:24-25; Jeremiah 23:23-24; Psalm 139:7-12. God knows everything about everything and God has the power to accomplish His will, therefore His perfect choices ensure that everything is known, accomplished, and completed decided from eternity past. It is impossible for God to be wrong in anything that He decides.
God has absolute authority because all belongs to Him Psalm 50:10.
God has absolute authority over salvation, because He provided the payment of redemption through the death of His own Son 1 Corinthians 6:20; Ephesians 1:6-8; 1 John 2:2.
God has absolute authority to establish His will 1 Samuel 2:6-8; 1 Chronicles 29:11,12. Nothing catches God by surprise for He ensures all things work according to His will Ephesians 1:11. That even includes the allowance of the wicked and evil in order for His will to be accomplished Proverbs 16:4.
God's kingdom, power and glory will reign forever Matthew 6:13.
God is sovereign over all His works Acts 15:18.
As God pleases, He does Psalm 135:6. Therefore it ought to be the believer's goal to please God 2 Corinthians 5:9.
God is sovereign for His own glory Ephesians 1:14.
So how is it possible that evil exists, if God is sovereign? God does allow it for His own glory. God is not the author of evil, or He would not be holy. Sovereignty and free will seem to form an apparent contradiction. However, they do not, because free will would always choose against God apart from God's intervention. Free will does not dilute sovereignty and sovereignty does not negate free will. Free will, left to itself spirals down to emptiness and hopelessness Romans 1:21, 24-32; Ephesians 4:17-19, 22.
What should you learn from God's sovereignty? What people should learn from God's sovereignty is to respond to His mercy and be extremely thankful for His sovereignty and mercy in action. We should not think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think, for then we begin to question God Romans 12:3. Praise His name, His plan, His choice, because He is worthy and His sovereignty ensures He will always remain worthy of our worship forever Revelation 5:11-14.
