How to develop Biblical Passion for Reaching People
It's interesting that the six times the word passion is used in Scripture, it's always a negative use. So why do we use passion in a positive way?
Passion is defined as any powerful or compelling emotion, strong desire, extravagant fondness or enthusiasm. It can be the object of desire or the outburst of strong emotion or even the state of being acted upon as in the Passion of Christ (according to dictionary.com). The word “passion” in Scripture is used related to sinful desires (although the NASB uses it for a donkey in heat Jer. 2:24). Yet, we use the word in a positive way. Passion in a positive way is the godly desire to see God's will accomplished, like seeing people reached for the sake of Christ. So how do you develop passion if you don't have very much and how do you channel it in a godly direction?
Like all things…where and what you focus on becomes your passion. If you spend great amounts of time, energy, and resources in gardening, gardening becomes your passion. The same is true for golf, fishing, painting, children, family, work, worship, reading, cars, landscaping, traveling, politics and exercise. The challenge is how to keep something from becoming an idol of the heart, rather than a healthy and godly enjoyment of life. There's nothing wrong with gardening, but if gardening prevents you from reaching a neighbor, then it may have become an idol of the heart. Work is necessary to provide for family, but over commitment to work, can reveal worry, insecurity, trusting in the things of this world and therefore an idol of the heart.
So how do you develop a passion for reaching people? If you pursue what God commands, you'll acquire a biblical passion. What does God command? Let's look at the biblical word “pursue.” It's the word “dioko-.” It means to make haste, press forward, and be zealous. God directs us to pursue:
Pursue what lies ahead, instead of holding onto the past Philippians 3:12. The past is in the past, so leave it there and press forward to God's will - being conformed to Christ (Romans 8:29). Too many Christians live in the past and it holds them back from growing and reaching others for Christ. Christians hold on to both sins and hindrances (Hebrews 12:1), which weigh them down and they are neutralized for building God's kingdom.
Pursue peace Hebrews 12:14; 1 Peter 3:11. Without pursuing peace, we'll never see the Lord working in our lives. Peace is not merely the cessation of hostility, but also, the provision of unity through the truth and power of God (Philippians 4:7-8). When we try to justify ourselves, we defend our words and actions and in the process often create greater friction, tension, and problems. Paul commands us to keep on living at peace with others, as far as it depends on us (Romans 12:18). We pursue peace by considering others as more important than ourselves (Philippians 2:1-4). Christians often ignore others or remain at a good distance, but that often prevents them from enjoying the fellowship God intends believers to have, even those who have different preferences.
In the process of pursuing peace, pursue what builds up others Romans 14:19. What builds up others? God's Word guided by the Holy Spirit! So as we pursue the growth of others (Romans 15:1-4), we'll grow in our passion to reach others. That means we will gather together with others to grow in Christ and worship God as a corporate body (Romans 15:5-6). As we gather and worship, we'll accept one another and serve each other, even as Christ accepted and serves us (Romans 15:7-8).
Pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart 1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:22. Interesting, it notes “with those who call on the Lord” means I can't obey God outside of the context of other people. God calls us to gather (Hebrews 10:24-25). We learn about righteousness, faith, love and peace by putting into practice the biblical truths we learn from Scripture and PEOPLE give us the opportunities to practice what we're learning (Philippians 4:8-9).
Pursuit must be by faith Romans 9:30-32. Israel did not pursue God's will by faith and so fell away. They pursued the law, but not by faith. God never meant for man to do anything apart from faith. And therefore anything apart from faith results in emptiness and failure. That's why people who withdraw, or are shy, or are inhibited, or even retire from serving God, miss out on the joy of God's blessing and building God's kingdom.
As you pursue God's will (what God commands), God will infuse His passion for reaching people, and you'll reap the blessings He wants for you!
