Biblical Teaching on the Love of God
God is Love 1 John 4:16. Ryrie says, Love in God is seeking the highest good and glory of His perfections. This implies no selfishness in God as it would in human beings. Thiessen writes, “Love is that perfection of the divine nature by which He is eternally moved to communicate Himself. Vine writes, “God's love expresses the deep and constant love and interest of a perfect Being towards entirely unworthy objects, producing and fostering a reverential love in them towards the Giver, and a practical love towards those who are partakers of the same, and a desire to help others to seek the Giver.”
God's love toward man. The supreme act of God's love is revealed through Christ's death on the cross. Romans 5:8. God's love acts with benevolence, grace, mercy and persistence or longsuffering. God's love does what is best for us. We experience His love either through discipline Heb. 12:5-6 or through blessing John 15:10-11.
God's love is not experienced by the unbeliever John 5:42.
God, yet, loves the whole world John 3:16.
What is God's love like? Substitute “God” for “love” and you will know God's love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.
God is patient - He doesn't force Himself on you, but forbears when you provoke or oppose Him.
God is kind - He is sympathetic, gentle and looks at His children with great hope for growth.
God is not jealous against you - He is jealous for His holiness and is deserving of total and complete worship, but He allows you to choose against Him.
God does not brag - God demonstrates His love in the superlative and has no comparison, but doesn't rub it in your face. He states it in Scripture and lets you read about the wonderful things He has done for you.
God is not arrogant - He is God and knows and can do all things, so He is not able to be arrogant. He doesn't assert Himself on you if you want to miss out on His blessing.
God does not act unbecomingly - He conforms to what is right fitting and appropriate because He is righteous waiting for you to be willing to be transformed in the heart.
God does not seek His own - He sent His only Son for you.
God is not provoked - He is not aroused to outbursts of anger in your failures.
God does not take into an account a wrong suffered - He has already dealt with your sins on the cross, so now He wants to help you grow up. He covers a multitude of sins and waits to pour out blessing on you.
God does not rejoice in unrighteousness - He is not waiting for you to mess up so you can be zapped. It grieves Him when we sin.
God rejoices with the truth - He rejoices like a parent watching his child grow as His children walk in the truth.
God bears all things - He tolerantly puts up with your sins as you progress toward spiritual maturity.
God believes all things - He knows how best to help us grow and already sees you in glory.
God hopes all things - He promises to complete the work He began at the moment of salvation until the day of Christ.
God endures all things - He remains steadfast in every problem and temptation making a way of escape for you to endure all things.
God never fails - He is never overwhelmed, tired, or feels like you are hopeless. He promises to stay with you until you are in heaven.
God intends for the believer to use His love toward others Matt. 22:37-39
It is your highest command and fulfillment of the law Rom. 13:8-10
It is the only way to love others 1 John 4:20-21.
The love of God has been poured out into the believer's heart Rom. 5:5.
It is expressed as a response to His love 1 John 4:8-16.
When you love God, you will hate the world systems 1 John 2:15-17
When you love others, you know you have passed from death to life 1 John 3:14.
