Biblical Teaching on Sanctification (Transformation)
We studied in Romans 8:29 that God's purpose is to take the believer and transform them to the image of Jesus Christ. It doesn't happen automatically at the point of salvation, but is a process of discipleship in growth. Another word for that process is sanctification. Sanctification is a word that means “to be set apart for a purpose” - the purpose of God. It's interesting that the Hebrew word for sanctification primarily describes things, while the New Testament, Greek word, describes sanctification about people. If you are a believer, you are also a saint, which comes from the word “sanctification,” or a “set apart one.”
There are three stages of Sanctification:
Positional Sanctification - the believer is eternal separated to God through Christ's death Hebrews 10:10. At his point the believer is called a saint Philippians 1:1; Hebrews 3:1; 1 Corinthians 1:2; 6:11; 2 Thessalonians 2:13
Experiential Sanctification - as the believer is controlled by the Holy Spirit, the character of Christ is formed in him and therefore the believer is sanctified Galatians 5:16; Romans 8:4; John 17:19.
Ultimate Sanctification - when the believer passes from this life to the next and receives the resurrection body, he no longer has a sin nature and is eternally in a sanctified condition.
Uniqueness of each stage of what is Sanctified.
Positional sanctification - the believer's spirit is regenerated and set apart for God 1 Thessalonians 5:23.
Experiential Sanctification - the believer's soul grows more into Christ's character set apart for God's purposes Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:23-24.
Ultimate Sanctification - the believer's body is sanctified with a resurrection body 2 Corinthians 5:1-8; 1 John 3:2.
Two heresies of the teaching on Sanctification:
Lawlessness - called “Antinomianism” which teaches that because the believer is forgiven, then he can live as he pleases so that grace might abound. But Romans 6:1-2.
Sinlessness - called “Perfectionism” which teaches that a believer can become perfectly free from sin in this life. But Romans 7:15-25; 1 John 1:8.
The Agents of Sanctification:
There is nothing believers can do to be sanctified 1 Corinthians 3:1-3; Galatians 3:3.
God the Father 1 Thessalonians 5:23
God the Son Hebrews 10:10; Ephesians 5:26
God the Holy Spirit 2 Thessalonians 2:13.
God's Word John 17:17; Ephesians 5:26
What are the results of sanctification?
Greater yieldedness to God Romans 12:1.
Greater freedom from sin Romans 6:1-14, 22; 1 John 2:1-2
Greater growth and fruit 2 Peter 3:18; John 15: 2-8; Galatians 5:22-23
Greater submission to God James 4:7-8
Greater desire to serve Hebrews 9:9-14
Practical implications of Sanctification:
When the believer is living in sin, he is positionally sanctified, but experientially carnal 1 Corinthians 3:1-3.
The teaching should be applied to eating 1 Timothy 4:4-5. Every meal should be prayed over for the sake of good health.
