Biblical Teaching on Prayer
Prayer is one the greatest resources God gives us in our relationship to Him. Let me scratch the surface in these two short pages to remind us of the importance of prayer. Always remember: you are not spiritual because you pray, but you pray because you are spiritual. The Christian who does not pray should question whether he is a Christian.
Prayer is for every Christian as a royal priest 1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:6. If you are a Christian, you are a royal priest and you represent yourself to God. Believers went through a priest prior to Christ, but today in the Church Age, you are free to go directly to God Hebrews 4:16.
No believer knows how to prayer precisely so that God understands, but all prayers are interpreted by the Holy Spirit Romans 8:26,27. There are no “spiritual” Christians who know how to pray, unless the prayer is according to God's will, but there are Christians who know they are helpless before God, so they pray! Those who don't pray, or are unwilling to venture forth a public prayer, have merely not reached the point of understanding the importance of prayer and the humility necessary to pray before others.
The modus operandi (practice) of prayer. Pray:
Addressed to God the Father Matthew 6:9; Eph. 3:14; Eph. 5:20.
In the name of God the Son (Jesus) John 14:13,14; 16:23,24.
In the power of the Holy Spirit Eph. 6:18.
Prayer is made to God the Father from three sources:
From God the Son Hebrews 7:25
From the Holy Spirit Romans 8:26,27
From the believer Hebrews 4:16
The only prayer made by the unbeliever that is answered is a prayer of faith for salvation Psalm 66:18; Rom. 10:9-10.
Prayer is normally given in four aspects:
Confession of sin 1 John 1:9
Adoration of God Ephesians 5:20;
Supplication and Petition Ephesians 6:18
Thanksgiving 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Prayer is rendered ineffective when:
Calling out to God from pride Job 35:12,13
Sin is regarded and held in the heart Psalm 66:18
Failing to be compassionate toward others Proverbs 21:13
Failing to trust by faith Matthew 21:22; Mark 11:24
Living apart from the filling of the Holy Spirit Eph. 6:18
The motivation is for selfish purposes James 4:2,3
Failing to live with marital harmony 1 Peter 3:7
Living in disobedience 1 John 3:22
Asking outside of God's will 1 John 5:14
There are three stages of prayer:
Prayer preparation 2 Chronicles 20:1-4
Prayer 2 Chronicles 20:5-13
Prayer pursuit 2 Chronicles 20:14-30. This is a marvelous account of how prayer works. Prayer is not a flippant matter before a casual acquaintance. Prayer is holy communication before the holy, sovereign, and wise God of the universe. Jehoshaphat gives the proper approach to God and therefore reaps the bountiful blessings of God's holy response! You have to read the passage to get a glimpse of God's desire to bless!
Principles on prayer:
It is related to the omniscience of God Isaiah 65:24
It is the privilege of believers to intercede for others Exodus 32:9-16; Numbers 14:11-12
Perseverance is important in prayer as God's mandate Matthew 7:7-8; 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Prayer gives stability for life Phil. 4:6-7
Prayer according to God's word is God's desire John 15:7; 1 John 3:22. The key here is when the Word is in the believer, the believer adjusts to the righteousness of God and prays according to God's character and plan. When the believer's prayer lines up with God's will, the prayer will be answered. Therefore, a key element of prayer is to help the believer line up with God's will 1 John 5:14. How do you know if you are praying according to God's will? Know God's Word!
One of the great privileges of praying is praying through Scripture. If God's Word is the Word of God, then as we pray through the Word, then we'll be much more in line with the will of God when we pray. It's obvious and simple, but it takes practice. Take a Psalm and base your prayers on the Scripture. It makes prayer worthwhile!
