Biblical Teaching on Hope
The word “hope” is an elusive word for many people, because it is associated with a tenuous desire that things may or may not work out, “I hope it doesn't rain today.” But that is not the biblical concept of hope. The word hope is a simple word and could be translated, “confident expectation.”
The Apostle Paul teaches that Christians are free from the law and sin positionally, according to Romans 6 and 7, but Romans 7 describes the Christian's struggle with sin experientially. That may cause some Christians to feel hopelessly caught in the middle of God and the flesh, but God wants the Christian to have great hope. Romans 8 is a chapter on hope. It teaches us to hope, confidently expect, God will work in our lives to free us from the law and sin in our experience. It is impossible apart from God, but by means of the Spirit of life and God's Word, we can live free by faith.
We've already seen a challenging verse in Romans 5:5, which says, “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Man's hope always disappoints, but when we studied the passage, the hope in Romans 5:5 is God's hope and His hope never disappoints. So, what do we know about God's hope?
God's hope is confident expectation in an unseen God Rom. 4:18. Abraham had confident expectation that God's promises were more real than the reality of his situation. Therefore, he trusted God to provide.
God's hope develops through testing Rom. 5:3-4. It's through the trials of life, which produces a persevering lifestyle that grows in spiritual strength and that produces godly character, which develops hope.
Gods hope doesn't disappoint Rom. 5:5. Those who hope apart from God will always be disappointed
We are saved in hope Rom. 8:24. Salvation is not something we can see, so God's hope is the spiritual reality of trusting God to have done and do what He says in His Word, without seeing the evidence of it.
Scripture gives hope Rom. 15:4. God's Word exhorts and comforts us to focus and to depend on the Holy Spirit's power to persevere patiently in life.
Ultimately, God is our hope Rom. 15:13. If you have God living His life in you, you'll have His joy and peace!
It's the unbelievers who have no hope 1 Thes. 4:13.
Our hope is a BLESsed HAPpiness (BLESHAP)
This is a little acrostic on different types of hope in Scripture. When you are struggling with insecurity, or worry, or helplessness, meditating on these references will give you great confident expectations in God's hope.
Blessed hope Tit. 2:13.
Living Hope 1 Pet. 1:3.
Eternal Hope Tit. 1:2; 3:7.
Saving Hope Rom. 8:24.
Heavenly Hope Col. 1:5.
Anchoring Hope Heb. 6:19.
Purifying Hope 1 Jn. 3:3.
When we put our hope in God, then we realize how blessed we are in life. That causes us to live with the living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. That helps us experience the eternal relationship we have with Jesus Christ as a believer because God is always true to His Word and we can have confidence in what God promises. That helps the invisible reality of salvation as our saving hope becomes more real, because we see with spiritual eyes, rather than physical and it puts our eyes on the heavenly hope laid up in heaven. That increases our confidence in the anchoring hope that gives stability to our soul and motivates to purity within.
May you find great hope in the hope God is.
