Biblical Teaching on the Sin Nature - Part Two
In the message from Romans 7:14-25, we addressed the sin nature. The sin nature reflects the total depravity of man and separates man from God. Adam acquired the sin nature when he sinned by eating the fruit in the Garden of Eden and the sin nature is passed down to every human being in the body of flesh. We looked at the areas of weakness and strength, which produce personal sins and human good, respectively. And we also looked at many terms that are used in Scripture that refer to the sin nature. Finally we briefly looked at how God dealt with the sin nature.
God dealt with the sin nature in two main ways. First, God judged all personal sins on Jesus Christ, while He hung on the cross (2 Cor. 5:21; 1 John 2:1-2). Man's responsibility is to humbly accept God's free gift of that payment for, on behalf of, him because of Jesus death on the cross (Eph. 2:8; Gal. 2:16). Secondly, God's Spirit cut off the power of the sin nature from the believer at salvation. Let's amplify that and build.
When a person trusts Jesus Christ, God the Holy Spirit baptizes the person, i.e. identifies the person, into Christ 1 Cor. 12:13. Positionally, the believer is dead to sin (Rom. 6:7) and alive to God (Rom. 6:11). Therefore, the believer never has to sin again (1 John 3:6,7,9). However, experientially [in time] the believer still has the body of death [the sin nature] (Rom. 7:24) and that sin nature acts like a criminal sitting on the believer's shoulder tempting the believer to act independently from God. The believer must decide whom he will listen to: the Holy Spirit or the criminal [the sin nature].
The model for the believer is Jesus Christ. While Jesus Christ did not sin, nor did He have a sin nature [a criminal sitting on His shoulder], He was tempted in every way we are Heb. 4:15. Jesus was in a “similar” situation as Adam [born perfect]. The biblical teaching on the impeccability of Christ is another topic for how Jesus did not sin, the main point is that He did not and the question is how did He not? He was ALWAYS dependent on the Holy Spirit.
Luke's writings record for us how Jesus was dependent on the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was led to the wilderness, He was led by the Holy Spirit Luke 4:1,11. When Jesus moved about and performed miracles it was by the Holy Spirit Luke 5:17; 6:19; 8:46. Luke records the reality of it in Luke 4:18; Acts 10:38. In the same way, the believer who is totally dependent on the Holy Spirit will not sin.
The sin nature originates with man, not God. The sin nature cause some to be born liars, others develop the art (Ps. 58:3). In all cases the sin nature cannot please God Rom. 8:8. Some people do not resist the sin nature and suffer the consequences of their neglect Heb. 12:4-6.
The sin nature is the source of temptation for it desires to please itself rather than God Jam. 1:13-15. Consequently, the sin nature is Satan's inside covert agent seeking to devour the unsuspecting believer 1 Pet. 5:8. Regardless of Satan, the enemy, no one sins apart from his own choice Ezek. 18:20. While the sin nature is a part of the human life and affects every facet of life, the Christian can overcome it when controlled by the Holy Spirit. Fortunately, the sin nature is not a part of the resurrection body Phil. 3:18-21; 1 John 3:1-4; 1 Cor. 15:51-57.
The legalist says, live according to these laws and you'll over come the flesh [the sin nature]. It sounds great, but what happens is the believer keeps the rules in his own power - independent of the Holy Spirit. This is called human good coming from the sin nature's area of strength. Paul addresses this in Galatians, “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Have you suffered so many things in vain -- if indeed it was in vain? Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Gal. 3:1-4. Legalism merely stirs up the believer's pride for his ability to “keep” the law and his pride is concealed. The solution is humility before God, confession of acting independently from God, and pressing on in humility under God's authority Phil. 3:9-14.
You CAN have victory over the sin nature as you depend on the Holy Spirit. You can be locked into making human decisions because of the law of your members warring against the law of your mind, which brings you into captivity to the rule (the law) of your sin nature. You can be free from the power of the sin nature as you give yourself, surrender, to God in willingness to do His will according to His Word.
