Biblical Teaching on Walking
Last Sunday I provided you ten principles on walking. I had also asked you to do a little study and find out what the Bible says about “how not to walk.” We were blessed by the testimony of God's work in one of our sister's life and she read from Psalm 1 to not walk in the counsel of the wicked. I thought it appropriate to give just a few additional thoughts on walking, because while we take the concept for granted in life, it is exactly what we need for stability in the Christian life.
Walking is moving one foot in front of the other while the body weight is shifted forward onto that foot. The momentary state of off-balance is compensated when the foot is placed firmly upon the ground. Walking gives direction and advancement in life. The ground gives the stability in life. Either walking or an unstable ground can cause the person to waver. For example, I have heard that in an earthquake, the shaking ground causes an “anxiousness” of stability.
In the spiritual life, walking is the means of advancing in Christ whereby the believer learns about the Lord. The believer is tested related to that teaching as he moves forward in life. Passing the test advances the believer in his spiritual maturity, or failing the test causes the believer to sit down, or to regain solid standing, or to even take a step or two backwards to relearn the principle about Jesus Christ and life. The momentary time off balance is the circumstance of life when the believer is required to apply the particular promise or truth to his life.
It's fun to look at different words Scripture uses for walking:
The Hebrew halak means to move with a purpose in living, to go on a journey. It is used for the manner of living. Ezek. 5:6,7; 11:12,20.
The Greek words are peripateo- which refers to a lifestyle of living centered around something Eph. 4:17. Poreuomai which means a general way of life, a departure, or advancing in life Acts 9:31; 1 Pet. 4:3. Emperipateo- which means to walk about in, or among something as used for God manifesting Himself in the lives of believers. 2 Cor. 6:16. Stoicheo- march in rank, with emphasis on order, discipline, and humility Rom. 4:12; Phil. 3:16. Orthopodeo- walk in a straight path leaving a path for others, used negatively for someone departing from God Gal. 2:14.
The verb is used for physical mobilization Matt. 4:18; 9:5...
