Biblical Teaching on Faith
There are three system of thinking or perception in life: rationalism, empiricism and faith. Rationalism is the ability to reason through logic and intuition problems of life. It depends on a high intelligence quotient and personal ability to think what is true. Empiricism is the ability to perceive through the five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, and hear without any inborn abilities or preconceptions. It is perception based on observation and experience rather than by theorizing what is true. Faith is a system of non-meritorious perception based on confidence in the truth and authority of another. The object of faith is what has the merit or authority of the truth. In contrast to rationalism and empiricism, the subject of faith has no value; only the object of faith has value.
There are five words for faith in the Hebrew:
AMEN, is the simplest form for faith, which means to lean upon Gen. 15:6. Abraham leaned on the Lord and the Lord credited to him righteousness.
BATACH, is a wrestling term, which means to body slam your faith on an object Psalm 37:3; 91:2. It means to put your problems on the Lord and trust that He is going to work out the details!
CHASAH means to hide in the cleft of the rock in escape from danger, like a rabbit running from a fox Psalm 57:1; 25:20; 7:1.
JACHAL means to trust in the Lord when in great pain Job 13:15; Lamentations 3:21,24. It is faith under pressure in the stresses of life.
QAWAH is the strongest word for faith and pictures a thread that is woven together with many other strands because of years of growth through trials and troubles Psalm 25:3; Isaiah 40:31; Lamentations 3:25.
The Greek uses one main word for faith: PISTIS
It is used actively for the action of trusting, depending upon, relying upon an object for help, support, or belief Ephesians 2:8,9; 1 John 5:4,5 .
It is used passively for that which is believed, like the body of truth found in Scripture Hebrews 11:1; Jude 3.
It is used adjectively for the characteristic of faithfulness in a person Titus 2:10; 2 Thessalonians 1:4.
Study carefully when you read Scripture to know which is being used.
Faith, active and passive often inter-united, is the reality of what God blesses in life Hebrews 11:1. God's Word is the assurance of things we hope for and the evidence of what we do not see.
Faith is described in 2 Corinthians 4:18. Exercising faith, “we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Faith is necessary to please God Hebrews 11:6. For whatever is though, said, or done apart from faith is sin Romans 14:23. That is, every moment not dependent on the Lord is “missing the mark” of what God desires for us.
Faith is the means by which the Justice of God appropriates the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross to the believer. It is the spark of hope that simultaneously allows God to regenerate the dead human spirit so that God's life can exist in your life Romans 3:22,28; Titus 3:5; Galatians 2:16,20.
The Object of faith is the Lord Jesus Christ Acts 16:31. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. It's always the object of faith that has merit, not the subject. Remember that all the faith in the world does absolutely nothing if the faith is in the world and not the Lord Jesus Christ. Great faith in works, effort, or the world only provides judgment from God. How much faith is required? A tiny portion, like a mustard seed (a very small seed) Matthew 17:20. The object continues today to be Jesus Christ, yet we know Jesus Christ through Scripture 1 Corinthians 2:16, “For we have the mind of Christ.”
Faith must be exercised or it will become weak through atrophy Hebrews 4:1-3. Scripture is like currency to the believer 1 Peter 1:7-8. As the believer spends the word (trusts the promises of God's Word), he receives greater wealth and demonstrates grace to the world around him. Abraham trusted God's Word and made decisions based on God's promises and was greatly blessed Genesis 22:1-10; Romans 4:17-21
