Biblical Teaching on the Gospel
The Gospel comes from a Greek word that means good pronouncement, euaggelion, and the context determines what the good news is about. In Scripture, it refers to the good news about Jesus Christ. Out of Scripture, the word has been used to pronounce good news concerning a battle victory.
The Gospel Definition. Paul defines the gospel for us in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. Paul states that he has declared to them the gospel, but they are not holding fast to it (15:2). Then he describes what the gospel is in 15:3-4. 1) Christ died for our sins; 2) He was buried; 3) He rose again the third day. Furthermore, Paul ensures they know it is all according to what the Scriptures said would happen and there were many witnesses to that fact (15:5). Note especially that it says, “He died FOR our sins.” The word FOR identifies the preposition HUPER that we studied in Romans 5:6-8. Jesus Christ died in place of us as our substitute. What a Savior! We should also note, “He rose again.” The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is the same power that is available to you and I today (Romans 1:4; Ephesians 1:19). One more thing, it says, “He arose.” The form of the verb is passive, which means it happened to Jesus. He could have raised Himself, but He was raised by power of the Holy Spirit. That means that just as the Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead, so also the Holy Spirit will give you life from your troubles, hardship, and difficulties. God is not expecting you to raise yourself! Do you believe that gospel?
The “Need to Know” Information. What do you need to know? 1) You have to know that you are sinner Rom. 8:7. If you don't know that or don't think that, then you won't realize you need a Savior and THE Savior can do nothing for YOU. 2) You have to know that you need a Savior John 4:42, because you cannot save yourself. Most of what you learn about salvation comes after salvation when you have eternal life. 3) You can't do anything or add anything to what Jesus Christ has done for you Ephesians 2:8,9.
The enemy of the gospel is Satan 2 Corinthians 4:3-4. Satan blinds the minds of the unbelievers with false issues about God and the gospel. He blinds them with legalisms, works, and neglect of pursuing the truth, when Satan implies that the gospel and the Word of God is confusing.
The gospel must never be associated with a charge or money 2 Corinthians 11:7-8. Paul didn't go to Corinth to preach the gospel and take an offering. He went to give the gospel period, so that many might be lifted out of their petty confusions.
The gospel must be very clear Galatians 1:6-8. Paul addresses a different (heteros) gospel (1:6), which means one that is of a different kind. He clarifies in Galatians 1:7 that it is not another (allos), which means a similar gospel presented in a different way. Then he adds (1:8) that if he preaches a gospel that is any other (para - one that is alongside, but is not precisely the gospel), that God should curse him to damnation. In others words, if we distort the gospel, it's bad. For example, “you must believe in Christ, and be a member of our church” is a para gospel and worthy of cursing. Or, “you must believe in Christ, and be a good person” is contrary to the truth.
The believer's attitude toward the gospel Romans 1:16. There is no room to be ashamed of talking about the gospel if you are a son or daughter of God.
How do you define faith? Hebrews 4:1-3; 1 Peter 1:7-8. Faith is a non-meritorious (no merit, no return) decision of uniting with the Word of God (truth) and resting in that promise. It is 1) knowing something to be true; 2) agreeing with what you know to be true; and 3) trusting (relying upon, depending on) that truth. It is through faith that we become sons of God Galatians 3:26.
