Biblical Teaching on Love
We first ought to understand that God is love, but love is not God. God is the embodiment, the characteristic, the picture, the essence of love. God's love is unconditional, eternal, righteous, pure, holy, and faithful to His own character as He expresses love.
The world confuses love with lust, desire, and feelings. The world conveys that satisfaction means love has been fulfilled. The world distorts love by man-centered means to gain personal goals. The world and the enemy himself want you to get what you want in any way you can so you can feel loved. Human love has as many variations as the number of people on earth.
There may be feelings associated with godly love, but it is not a requirement to love with God's love to have or express feelings. Feelings come and go. God was not moved by feelings to send Jesus Christ to the cross. God sent Jesus Christ to the cross because it was the righteous requirement moved by His justice.
God is love 1 John 4:8
There are four kinds of love:
Agape (a-ga-pay) love is an unconditional action denying self for the sake of others 1 John 4:9. The verb is agapao- (a-ga-pa-o) which is love in action based on the character of the subject doing the loving, not on the character of the object of love.
Phileo- (fil-le-o) love is conditioned on mutual interaction of friendship, kindness and devotion John 5:20. God never commands you to phileo- another person, because there may not be a reason to phileo- them. God does command us to agapao- others (John 15:17), because that love is not based on the object, but the character of one the one doing the loving.
Eros (not in Scripture) is physical love.
Storge (not in Scripture) is family love. (There is a form of this word used in Scripture).
Love is action; it isn't passive 1 John 4:10
