Biblical Teaching on Eternal Security
When God saves a person, can that person lose their salvation? Some people say yes and some say no. There are reasons people ach give for their views and let me give you one that says you might not make it to heaven, “But he who endures to the end shall be saved.” Matthew 24:13. It looks like a person who doesn't endure may not be saved. Here's a principal: Always interpret Scripture based on other Scriptures and interpret difficult Scriptures based on easy Scriptures. With that said, let's see why Grace believes in Eternal Security and I'll come back to that verse at the end.
Eternal Security (ES) is based on having peace with God. Peace with God is based on what He has done, not what we have done. ES is based on the character of God, not the character or works of man.
Jesus Christ abolished the enmity between God and man on the cross Eph. 2:15-16
Therefore we have peace because of justification by faith Rom. 5:1
ES is based on what God did through Jesus Christ, not anything we did Eph. 2:8-9. It's not by our works, but the work of Jesus Christ. Because salvation doesn't depend on us, and because we did nothing to gain salvation, we can't do anything to lose salvation. The word “saved” in Eph. 2:8 is technically called a perfect periphrastic, which is the strongest way of saying something happened, with the results that continue on forever. The English language doesn't have any grammatical means to say this, except by amplifying that concept as stated. Both “grace” and “faith” are in the feminine gender and “this” (not of yourselves) is neuter, which as a demonstrative pronoun means it can't refer to either “grace” or “faith”, but refers to “this [salvation] is not of yourselves.” Furthermore, ES is a gift of God, something He will not take back.
ES belongs to those who are “in Christ.”
Nothing can separate us from Christ Rom. 8:38-39
We are baptized into Christ by the Holy Spirit 1 Cor. 12:13
We are seated with Christ in the heavenlies Col. 3:1-4
In Christ means we share His life 1 John 5:11-12
In Christ means we share His election Eph. 1:4
In Christ means we are adopted in God's family Eph. 1:5
In Christ means we are accepted to God in Christ Eph. 1:6
God Himself ensures our ES Jude 24
We may fail or even deny Him, but He will not deny Himself 2 Tim. 2:11-13
If we died (the point of salvation), we will (future reality) live with Him 2 Tim. 2:11
If we endure (living good, divine works), we will receive rewards, but if we deny Him (by failing to live according to His will, by His power, for His glory) He will deny us (the rewards that come in eternity).
If we deny Him (anything in our lives that is unfaithful to God), He remains faithful, for He cannot (ever, ever, ever) deny Himself (His own righteousness that came to you by justification).
All believers can have confidence in going to heaven 1 John 2:28; 3:21; 4:17.
Disobedient believers may die the Sin unto Death James 5:19-20; 1 John 5:16
Here's an acrostic I use to remember several approaches to explaining ES. Maybe it will help you. FISHLEGS
Family Approach John 1:12 - I'm in as a child of God, I can't get out (birth certificate analogy
Inheritance Approach 1 Pet. 1:4 - My inheritance is eternal and I can't lose it.
Sealing Approach Eph. 1:13 We are sealed secure by the Holy Spirit
Hands Approach John 10:28-30 Can't get out of His hands
Logical Love Approach Rom. 8:37-39
Election Approach Eph. 1:4 God elected us in eternity past and once elected, that can't be lost
Grammar Approach Eph. 2:8 Strongest way to say that my salvation is secure
Sovereign Approach Rom. 8:28-30 All verbs are aorist active indicatives. All are true...glorification.
So, why is Matthew 24:13 not a relevant verse? The basic meaning of the word “saved” means delivered. The verse is in the context of the tribulation in a passage called the Olivet Discourse. The believer who endures through the Tribulation will be delivered into the Millennium with Christ. The verse is not talking about ES.
