Biblical Change
Commit yourself to God's sovereignty and rule in your life by receiving Jesus Christ as your Savior (John 1:12; 1 Cor. 15:1-4; Eph. 2:8-9), and determining to live each day in a manner that pleases God (2 Cor. 5:9; Eph. 4:1; Col. 3:17).
Determine specific ways you have sinned against God and confess these sins to Him (1 John 1:9). Repent of your sinful ways, as revealed in Scripture, which are displeasing to God (Pro. 28:13; Acts 26:20; Rev. 2:5; 3:19).
Ask God for wisdom to know what changes He needs to make (James 1:5). Ask in faith that He will answer and do not doubt his ability to transform your life (Heb. 11:6; James 1:5-8).
Confess your specific sins to those against whom you have sinned by your words or actions (James 5:16). Forgive those who have sinned against you (Mark 1:25-26; Eph. 4:31-32) and reconcile with them if at all possible (Matt. 5:23-24; Rom. 12:18).
Diligently study God's Word on a regular basis (Joshua 1:8; Ps. 1:2; 2 Tim. 2:15, 3:16-17) and memorize Scripture to store His truth in your heart (Ps. 119:11, 16).
Pray often and in every situation (Luke 18:1f; Phil. 4:6-7; 1 Thes. 5:17).
Do what God says to do in His Word (Matt. 7:24-26; Jam. 1:22-25) regardless of your feelings (Gen. 4:6-7; Rom. 13:14; Gal. 5:16-17; 1 Pet. 4:2) in order to glorify God (Matt. 5:16; 1 Cor. 10:31), staying under the control and guidance of the Holy Spirit (John 14:26; 16:13; Rom. 8:14; Eph. 5:18-20). That means you depend on God's power, wisdom, and purpose, not your own (Eph. 1:18-20).
Your Power for Life Change
The Holy Spirit is your Guide, your Instructor, and your sensitive Counselor who reveals the wisdom of God to you (John 14:16, 26; 16:7-13; 1 Cor. 2:6-13). Jesus is at the right hand of God the Father, so He sent the Holy Spirit to empower us for living the Christian life. It's only when we rely on God's power of the Holy Spirit can we understand and live the Christian life.
The Holy Spirit does many things for you:
Gives regenerating power at spiritual birth (John 3:5-8; Titus 3:5).
Identifies you into the body of Christ (the church) (1 Cor. 12:13).
Gives you life (John 6:63; Romans 8:11).
Seals you in Jesus Christ (2 Cor. 1:21-22; Eph. 4:30).
Is your pledge of inheritance (2 Cor. 1:22; 5:5; Eph. 1:14), which will reach completion when you see the Lord face to face (1 Cor. 13:12; 1 John 3:2).
Indwells you if you've trusted in Jesus Christ as your Savior (John 14:16-17; 1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19; Gal. 4:6-7; 2 Tim. 1:14) and is proof that you belong to Christ (Rom. 8:9).
Bears witness to the truth of God as revealed in His Son, Jesus Christ (1 John 5:6-8) and bears witness to a believer that he is a child of God (Rom. 8:16).
Sanctifies the believer (sets him apart for God's use) and conforms him to the image of Jesus Christ (2 Thes. 2:13; 1 Pet. 1:2).
Anoints the believer to discern between truth and error (1 John 2:18-27).
Provides guidance by leading into all truth (John 16:13-14), giving direction for ministry decisions (Acts 13:2-4; 16:6-7) and helping in times of prayer (Rom. 8:26-27; Eph. 6:18; Jude 1:20).
Encourages by giving hope (Rom. 5:3-5; 15:13), interceding (Rom. 8:26), providing help (John 14:16; 15:26), and giving comfort (Acts 9:31).
Fills you (controls you when you depend solely on Him) to a new and higher level of spiritual living (Eph. 5:18-21).
Develops Christlike character in you (Gal. 5:22-23) through His transforming power (2 Cor. 3:18).
Helps a believer in worship (Phil. 3:3).
You must not grieve (Eph. 4:30) or quench (1 Thes. 5:19) the Spirit. You grieve the Spirit whenever you sin, and you quench the Spirit's power from your life when you do not confess and repent of your sins or rely on your own power, wisdom and purpose rather than God's (which is sin).
How do you know if you are filled with the Spirit? The fruit of the Spirit will be present and you will love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength seeking to serve others in order to please God.
