Revelation
If you wanted to communicate impending danger of a coming flood to a tribe of Amazon natives, how would you tell them? You heard a radio report, you know more rain is expected producing higher flooding, and you are motivated to do whatever is necessary. Most likely, you would quickly find out what you could about their language and then use sign language and a lot of jumping up and down to get their attention.
But in the process, you realize that they have no reason to believe what you are "signing." Somehow you have to convince them that your words, expressions, signs, and motions are really true. But they don't know you. They haven't seen you before. Why should they believe you?
God has a similar challenge with mankind. The human race is in danger of the Lake of Fire, unless God can communicate the danger to mankind. Mankind must believe God's way out. Revelation is God's disclosure of what is unknown. Amplified it is "the aspect of theology which deals with God making known to man His divine person and divine truth which would otherwise be unknown."
How God makes Himself Known
Consider that revelation cannot be discovered, but must be disclosed. We are incapable of uncovering truth about the infinite God and knowing Him. Therefore, God had to disclose Himself and His plan to mankind. Revelation comes from the Greek word for the last book of the Bible - apokalupsis. It means an unveiling. For the book of Revelation it is an unveiling or revealing of the end time events.
Revelation is given in two forms: General Revelation and Special Revelation. There are three sources of General Revelation. What are they?
Genesis 1:26-28 _________________________________
Romans 1:18-21 _________________________________
Exodus 14:13-20 _________________________________
What is most significant about the content of General Revelation? What is not included in it. The purpose of General Revelation is to give mankind sufficient light to hold the human race responsible and accountable. Hence, mankind is without excuse (Romans 1:20). We should also note that General Revelation isn't redemptive - it can't save (but does condemn). We can look for eternity and never see Christ in General Revelation.
Special Revelation is God's Word given through man to man. General revelation is like watching the old silent movies, whereas Special Revelation is the HDTV panoramic stereophonic dolby system of modern movies. There are two sources of Special Revelation:
John 1:14,18 The __________ Word
2 Timothy 3:16 The _____________ Word
There are many ways God has revealed Himself. What are some of them? Genesis 18:1-5; Exodus 3:2; 28:30; Isaiah 1:1
Special Revelation deals with the specifics concerning redemption and God's Kingdom program. Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.
Historical Fact Significance Verification
Christ died for our sins According to Scripture
He was buried & raised on third day According to Scripture
Another example is found in Romans 4:24-25.
Historical fact Significance
He was delivered up because of our transgressions
He was raised because of our justification
General Revelation, or the historical fact could have been seen by anyone at that time. However, Special Revelation reveals the theological significance of the historical fact. Without the Special Revelation, no one would have understood the significance. Because God the Father justified us, He raised Christ up.
There are two passages of Scripture which further contrast General and Special Revelation. Read Psalm 19:1-10.
What does the paragraph of 19:1-6 describe? ____________________
What does the paragraph of 19:7-10 describe? ___________________
*What is David saying in the final paragraph? ___________________
Read Romans 1:16-20.
What is described in 1:16,17? ______________________________
What is described in 1:18-20? ______________________________
Both General and Special Revelation reveal truth about God's person, plan, and purpose for life. Revelation is the first step in God's communication to mankind. God revealed everything that we need to know to please Him (Deuteronomy 29:29). Hence, Revelation is what God wanted mankind to know so that we might worship Him.
